Oxford Brookes University
Headington, Gipsy Lane
Oxford
OX3 0BP

Oxford Brookes is consistently rated as one of the best modern universities in the UK. It offers outstanding teaching, winning five national teaching fellowships for excellence in the last two years.

Brookes is renowned for the employability of its graduates – nine out of ten are in a job or further study six months after leaving university. Careers support is integrated into courses, as well as a professional service focussing on practical support.

Oxford is a student-friendly city with all the facilities you could want. It's also a centre for leading industries and Brookes' links in the region mean great opportunities for work placements across all areas, from publishing and healthcare to environmental agencies and Formula One.

At Brookes you will find a community of 18,000 students and over 2,000 staff, dedicated not just to furthering themselves but improving life locally, nationally and internationally. We are the sixth largest employer in Oxfordshire, contribute £1 million per day to the UK economy and are the world’s original Fairtrade university.

Brookes believes in enabling students to be the best they can be, whatever path they choose to follow. As Computer Science student, Joanne Garvey, puts it, “the ethos of the university is challenging but supportive - whatever you put in, Brookes will give you back with interest.”

Brookes can trace its origins back to May 1865, when the Oxford School of Art opened in a single room. The school’s initial intake of 126 students more than doubled within a year, and in 1868 a School of Science was incorporated within the institution.

Science classes included mathematics, magnetism and electricity, and inorganic chemistry. The focus on providing a practical, work-enhancing education is something that has continued to this day.

The institution became the Schools of Technology, Art and Commerce in 1934. And in the period of change following World War Two, it thrived under the leadership of John Henry Brookes – increasing the numbers of both students and courses.

In 1970 the Schools became Oxford Polytechnic. As the nation’s manufacturing industries declined and the knowledge economy grew, the polytechnic expanded its range of subjects to include professional qualifications in teaching, nursing and accountancy.

The polytechnic became Oxford Brookes University in 1992. In the 21st century Brookes has established itself as one of the UK’s leading modern universities, with a reputation for ‘outstanding teaching’ and ‘strong research’ (The Sunday times University Guide 2011).

With the higher education sector going through a period of change, Oxford Brookes is equipping itself for the future with a major redevelopment of its campuses. New buildings promise to enhance students’ experiences, and complement the high quality of teaching and research work.
