The School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) is a college of the University of London and the only Higher Education institution in the UK specialising in the study and research of Asia, Africa and the Middle East.  SOAS is unique in combining disciplinary expertise, language scholarship, and regional focus.   On the one hand, this means that SOAS remains a guardian of specialised knowledge in languages and periods and regions not available anywhere else in the UK. On the other hand, it means that SOAS scholars grapple with pressing issues - democracy, development, human rights, identity, legal systems, poverty, religion, social change - confronting two-thirds of humankind.  With the largest concentration of specialist staff (350+ academics) concerned with the study of Asia, Africa and the Middle East, SOAS is a global academic base, a crucial resource for London and a seat for international political debate and interaction.  It is distinctively positioned to analyse, understand and explain the world in which we live and has become the first port of call for the media and other government departments.

With more than 5,000 students from around the world on campus, SOAS makes for a fascinatingly diverse, lively and close-knit community (there are also over 3,000 distance learning students). Our students represent more than 130 nationalities, and all have an intellectual interest in the international issues in which the School specialises. You can learn as much outside the classroom as inside it.

SOAS offers more than 400 degree combinations and programmes in law and social sciences, languages and cultures and arts and humanities. Whether you are studying law or politics, history or economics, music or history of art, you have the opportunity to deepen your study by focusing on one or more of the regions it teaches.

While student numbers are growing and programmes expanding, SOAS retains a friendliness and warmth which has characterised the institution from its early days. It is the place for those who want to develop their understanding of the world, widen their horizons and put preconceptions of Africa, Asia and the Middle East to the test.

Whether you’re an aspiring UN diplomat, dream of staging kabuki plays, or are passionate about championing human rights, studying at SOAS will give you the skills and contacts to hit the ground running when you graduate. And on the way, you’ll be able to sample all the cultural, social and intellectual delights that London has to offer.
