Killer Penguins, Asteroids and Maple Leaves

By Shawn Smith
Posted 8/28/2013

Wednesday in Science, we're reading about killer penguins, texting moms, asteroid mining, designing a more pleasurable condom and a maple leaf controversy in Canada. Check out these and other science headlines from around the Web.

No Escape from a Hungry Penguin: Hungry penguins with tiny video cameras strapped to their backs have given scientists a rare glimpse of their killer feeding habits, reports The Guardian. In more than 14 hours of filming using cameras strapped to 11 Adélie penguins, not once did a bird fail to capture its prey. Penguins are such efficient killers, most of their victims have no time to hide, while others try in vain to flee. Watch it all on Penguin-cam.

The Last 925,000 Pounds Are Always the Hardest: Boston's citywide challenge to lose one million pounds in a year appears to have fallen about 925,000 pounds short, The Wall Street Journal reports. With just a few months left to go, the city's collective weight loss has reached only about 75,000 pounds. Why did the city diet fail? Maybe it was the "Scooper Bowl" all-you-can-eat ice cream festival.

The University of Buckingham was founded in 1976. It is the only independent University in the United Kingdom to hold a royal charter, which gives it the power to award its own degrees, and is currently ranked in the top 20 in the country. It is a non profit-making charity. From the outset its primary aim has been to focus on the teaching of students, at a time when government has decided that research should be a university’s primary goal (though of course Buckingham has significant and growing research strengths too).

The University of Buckingham is a thriving and challenging academic community, dedicated to excellence. However it remains a university on a human scale: with just under a thousand students on campus it is a place where nobody is lost in the crowd and friendships are quickly made. It has one of the best student:staff ratios in the world and its professors and lecturers are as involved with students as is humanly possible. Thus it is not surprising that it heads the league tables of student satisfaction.

Buckingham is the only university independent of direct government support in the United Kingdom and has used its independence to pioneer a distinctive approach to higher education.

On 27 May 1967, The Times published a letter from Dr J. W. Paulley, which said, “Is it not time to examine the possibility of creating at least one new university in this country on the pattern of those great private foundations in the USA, without whose stimulus and freedom of action the many excellent state universities in that country would be so much poorer.”

This idea was taken up by a number of people in the business and academic worlds and three London conferences followed, two in 1968 and one in early 1969. Active supporters included Max Beloff, then Gladstone Professor of Politics at Oxford and later first Principal of the University College at Buckingham, Professor Harry Ferns and Ralph Harris. Harry Ferns and Ralph Harris were both prominent members of the Institute of Economic Affairs, an organisation whose ideas have played a major role in the development of the University.

A suitable site was found in Buckingham and on 29 March 1973 the University College at Buckingham (UCB) was incorporated, in the form of a non-profit making company registered as an educational charity. The Council of Management held its first formal meeting on 3 April 1973. Lord Hailsham, the Lord Chancellor, became the first Visitor of the College and laid its foundation stone in May 1974. UCB was formally opened in February 1976 by the Rt. Hon. Mrs Margaret Thatcher, MP, as former Secretary of State for Education. It had 65 students.

Buckingham University

As the UK’s smallest university, we can offer you a guided walking tour of our campus. You can also request to meet a member of the academic staff in the department you are interested in joining.

We are also happy to make arrangements for any students with specific learning difficulties to meet with a member of our Student Welfare team, who are able to cater to most needs.

If you would like to come and take a look at the University and meet some members of staff and former students, then why not book a tour? Our Admissions Officers will be happy to arrange a visit for you.
