Colchester
CO4 3SQ

The University of Essex is one of the UK's leading academic institutions, rated ninth nationally for excellence in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE, December 2008).

Founded in 1964, when we opened our doors to just 122 students in Colchester, our University has grown in both reputation and size. We have developed worldwide standing for top quality teaching and research, with our academic departments spanning the social sciences, humanities, science and engineering, and law and management. We now have more than 11,000 students, studying at our three campuses, and are one of the UK's most internationally diverse campus universities, with students from over 130 countries.

A community feel

Our largest campus is based at Wivenhoe Park, just outside Colchester in north Essex. Set in over 200 acres of attractive parkland, our Colchester Campus is a mixture of 1960s buildings and more recent additions, including our 1,000-seater Ivor Crewe Lecture Hall.

The majority of our academic departments are based at our Colchester Campus. They are housed off a series of bustling squares with their close proximity designed to reflect, and nurture, the interdisciplinary nature of our outstanding teaching and research.

Study on the coast

Our Southend Campus, opened in 2007, is in the heart of Southend-on-Sea in south Essex.  The Gateway Building offers modern, state-of-the-art teaching and business environments in a busy town centre location, and three departments run courses here. Our students benefit from modern lecture rooms, rehearsal studios with panoramic sea views and high-tech medical skills labs.

Clifftown Studios, a renovated church, provides further space for our East 15 Acting School students, complementing existing facilities in The Gateway Building. Original features of the church have been maintained to offer a beautiful environment to study and perform in.

Edge of the city

Our East 15 Acting School has three sites in Loughton; the Hatfields Campus, Roding House and the Technical Unit with excellent training and rehearsal facilities.

Each site is just a five-minute walk from the nearest London Underground station, Debden, and thirty minutes, by tube, from Liverpool Street. The Central Line provides access to Central London and all the major tube and mainline stations, including Eurostar.
