Whatever you aim to do in life, it pays to get a good education. And with high standards of teaching and learning and excellent facilities that's exactly what our students can expect from the University of Huddersfield. Spread over three campuses in Huddersfield, Oldham and Barnsley we help thousands of people, from school leavers to those returning to education after a gap, achieve their goals each year. Our academic staff are continually rated as providing high quality teaching in an exciting and stimulating environment.  And, we’re in the top 10 in England for teaching excellence (Sunday Times 2011) and first amongst all universities in Yorkshire.

We also have an impressive record for graduate employment, with 93.7% of our students in work or further study six months after graduating. This places us joint 16th in Unistats and top in our region. We also have excellent links with industry and every year over 2,000 students take part in work placements, helping them develop the real world skills they need for their successful future career.

Nearly £100 million have been spent on campus development over the past five years, making sure our students have access to some of the best facilities in the country. Our campuses also have vibrant social scenes and we have a very active Students’ Union with more than 70 clubs and societies for students to get involved in.

The University of Huddersfield has a history of close involvement with industry, business and its cultural community. Traditionally, the Universities courses all include a vocational skills, and, with the second highest proportion of sandwich students and the highest proportion of sandwich and part-time students in the north of England this has continued in to the present day.

It is a direct descendant of the Huddersfield Young Men's Mental Improvement Society, which started in 1841. This Society became the Huddersfield Mechanics' Institution in 1843 and remained so until 1884 when it, together with the Female Educational Institute (1846-1883), became the Technical School and Mechanics' Institute. This became the Technical College in 1896 and was succeeded by the College of Technology in 1958. Then in 1970 this College and the Oastler College amalgamated to become Huddersfield Polytechnic. The Polytechnic of Huddersfield became the University of Huddersfield in 1992.
